Grounds Staff
The Town Council has a team of five Grounds Staff who, under the Head Groundsman, are responsible for maintenance and upkeep of the Council owned areas of the town.
The Grounds Staff take care of the following:

Town Hall maintenance – keep gardens, car park, footpath, disabled ramp and steps clean and free from litter debris, grit car park (also footpath and steps in inclement weather)

Spring / Summer / Autumn planting and general maintenance of Muster Green, and flowerbeds throughout the town.

Winter Management
The team also remove graffiti and respond to issues in the town on behalf of West Sussex County Council and Mid Sussex District Council.

Muster Green
Muster Green is situated west of Haywards Heath, along the B2272, just off Butlers Green Road and adjacent to Muster Green North. It serves as the primary western gateway to Haywards Heath. Historically, this road was part of the A272, connecting Lewes to Crawley, until the opening of the Haywards Heath relief road in September 2014.​
Designated a Conservation Area in 1979, Muster Green was transferred to the care of the Town Council in 1987. It is meticulously maintained, featuring traditional flowerbeds and an avenue of impressive trees. Surrounded by Victorian and Edwardian houses, with the War Memorial at its apex, the Green provides a welcoming and distinguished entry point to the town.​
Muster Green also has historical significance as the site of a minor battle during the English Civil War between the Royalists and the Roundheads. This battle thwarted the Royalists' access to steel in Lewes, which could have altered the outcome of the war and, potentially, England’s history. This connection to the town’s past is commemorated in the town logo and the mayoral chains of office.​​
Today, Muster Green is regarded as a premier green space, celebrated as the "jewel in the crown" of Haywards Heath’s open areas. It remains a cherished landmark for both residents and visitors, symbolising the town’s rich history and scenic charm.
Green Flag Award for Muster Green
We are celebrating our 12th consecutive Green Flag Award for Muster Green, an international quality mark for parks and green spaces. The news that Muster Green has met the standards required for the accreditation is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that care for the green space, so that visitors and residents alike can enjoy it.
Street Furniture
​The Town Council has responsibility for a wide range of street furniture as follows:

Street lighting - West Sussex County Council is responsible for most street lighting in Haywards Heath. However, the Town Council is responsible for some street lights, mainly in footpaths, twittens and unadopted areas. Street lights that are not working correctly and have the Haywards Heath Town Council label may be reported by contacting the Town Hall, quoting the location and street light number. Please see our street light location list. Any lights not on the list must be reported directly to West Sussex County Council.
