Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Haywards Heath join thousands across the nation on Holocaust Memorial Day

The Town Mayor, Cllr Howard Mundin, and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Alastair Mcpherson took part in a moving ceremony to mark International Holocaust Memorial Day at the Town Hall, together with members of Amnesty International.

During the commemoration, local resident Lesley Urbach spoke movingly of her own families experience of the Holocaust and Irene Balls of Haywards Heath Amnesty International talked of the theme of Ordinary People.

Attendees then headed to the War Memorial on Muster Green where the Mayor and Deputy Mayor laid stones to remember the countless lives that have been lost of impacted by genocide.

Town Mayor, Cllr Howard Mundin, comments:

“We support this international day and it was very humbling to reflect on those who endured genocide and to take the time to honour the survivors and all those whose lives were changed beyond recognition

This year’s theme of ordinary people should remind us how ordinary people, such as ourselves, can play a bigger part than we might envision in challenging prejudice today. It is only by learning from the past that we can build a better future”
