HHTC to fly the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day 2020

Published: 17 August 2020

Haywards Heath Town Council will proudly fly the Red Ensign – the official flag of the UK Merchant Navy - on Muster Green to mark UK Merchant Navy Day on 3rd September 2020. This will be followed by a two minutes silence to remember the sacrifices and hardship endured by the merchant navy seafarers, past and present.

Town Mayor, Cllr McPherson Comments

“Haywards Heath Town Council would like to remember and raise awareness of our dependence on our past, present and future seafarers. We will proudly fly the Red Ensign and hold a virtual two minutes silence at 11am on 3rd September to pay our respect to the brave men and women who kept the United Kingdom afloat during both world wars and to thank all the modern seafarers who are responsible for over 90% of our imports and exports today.

We owe a gratitude of thanks to the brave members of the Merchant Navy who played a vital role in our history in the most difficult and dangerous conditions and will be flying the Red Ensign at our War Memorial on Muster Green in their honour.

I would also like to ask if any of our community have any photos, memories or stories of our Merchant Navy or their experiences of the Merchant Navy that they would like to share with our community. We will be very happy to add these to our virtual coverage of the ceremony on the day to create a fitting montage of memories on Merchant Navy Day 2020.”

Please note this is a virtual ceremony which will be available on the Town Council’s YouTube and Social Media channels only. Please send photos or stories to be included in this tribute to maria.horne@haywardsheath.gov.uk.
